Hampton Roads to the Palmetto State: Route and Timing

South Carolina is one of the shorter long-distance moves from Hampton Roads. Myrtle Beach is the closest major destination, while Charleston, Columbia, and Greenville sit farther south and inland. Most routes run south through North Carolina on I-95, and we confirm your delivery window once your load date is set.

Fall timing deserves a second look. The Atlantic hurricane season runs through November 30, and a storm near the Carolina coast can change a delivery plan. If a storm is forecast near your move date, call us and we will talk through your options. We recommend booking four to six weeks ahead for South Carolina moves.

South Carolina Destinations and Rules to Know

Charleston, the Grand Strand, Columbia, and Greenville

Hampton Roads households head to every corner of the state. Charleston and the Lowcountry draw coastal-living moves, while Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand bring condo moves where the building may set move-in hours or require an elevator reservation. Columbia and Greenville bring more single-family and townhome moves. South Carolina also hosts major military installations, including Joint Base Charleston, Fort Jackson in Columbia, Shaw Air Force Base near Sumter, and Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort.

Hurricane Season Planning

We suggest keeping your move date flexible if you are heading to the coast before November 30. Keep your valuables and documents with you, and watch the forecast for both Hampton Roads and your South Carolina destination.

South Carolina Vehicle and License Deadlines

According to Richland County, you have 45 days to transfer your vehicle title and registration after moving to South Carolina. You pay county property tax on the vehicle before you register it. You may drive on your Virginia license for up to 90 days before you must switch to a South Carolina license.
